To Sharpen or Not to Sharpen?

A question we get a lot is how do I know if a blade needs serviced. The most obvious way to know is if the blade is dragging on the coat or seems to be having issues cutting.

When a blade is due for service you can look at the rails and see how the friction from use has caused the blade to wear down, sometimes there may even be discoloration or rust/corrosion present.

As you can see in the picture, the rails of this blade are discolored and worn.

This is in contrast to a blade that has been recently serviced and used, and just requires a cleaning like this blade.

When we compare the 2 blades, one shows a significant amount of wear as opposed to one that shows little wear. In this case we would suggest waiting to service the bottom blade and instead cleaning and oiling it. This will insure a longer life for the blade overall.
